Solid Wood Dining Table Care: Scratch, Heat and Stain Protection

A natural solid wood dining table is the heart of a home. This piece of furniture, where family meals, long chats with friends, and the most special moments are shared, is a living work of art with each tree's unique grain pattern, knot details, and natural tone transitions. Unlike chipboard or MDF veneered tables, real solid wood is long-lasting; it can be passed down from generation to generation. However, to preserve the rich texture of this living material from day one, a few basic maintenance rules must be followed.

The Nature of Solid Wood: Humidity and Temperature Sensitivity

Solid wood is a living, breathing material. It can slightly shrink when the ambient humidity decreases and expand when it increases. To maintain your table's form:

  • It is ideal to keep the ambient humidity between 40%-60%.
  • Avoid placing the table closer than 1 meter to direct air conditioning drafts, radiators, or an active fireplace.

Daily Cleaning and Heat Protection

  1. Hot Pot and Plate Trivets: Pots fresh from the oven or stove and hot teapots can burn the protective oil or varnish on the wood's surface, leaving a white ring stain (heat stain). Always use cork or fabric trivets.
  2. Microfiber and Warm Water: For daily cleaning, a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with warm water is sufficient, instead of chemical glass cleaner or abrasive sprays. After wiping, always remove any moisture from the surface with a dry cloth.
  3. Beware of Acidic Liquids: If lemon juice, vinegar, red wine, or coffee spills, wipe it immediately without waiting.

Annual Natural Oiling and Scratch Removal

Naturally oiled (oil-finish) solid tables should be nourished once or twice a year with natural linseed oil or beeswax. This process prevents the wood from drying out and cracking and brings out the depth of the grain. Slight superficial scratches on the surface can be completely removed in minutes by sanding very finely (400-600 grit) in the direction of the grain and then applying a few drops of maintenance oil.
